The Descent from the Cross is the central panel of a triptych painting by the Baroque artist Peter Paul Rubens in 1612–1614. It is still in its original place, the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, Belgium. The painting is considered to be one of Rubens’ masterpieces. The painting depicts the moment when the body of Jesus Christ is taken down from the cross after his crucifixion.

Christ’s lifeless body is being removed from the cross, in a scene of intense grief. His mother Mary reaches forward, desperate to touch her son. In spite of this the movement of Christ’s body seems graceful and peaceful. The tension between pain and beauty gives this painting great power.

The Descent from the Cross image by Peter Paul Rubens has been digitally improved which highlights the beautiful aspect of this art piece. This ensures a spectacular viewing in your home, office or religious location.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens (28 June 1577 – 30 May 1640) was a Flemish painter, draughtsman and diplomat. He was the most versatile and influential Baroque artist of northern Europe in the seventeenth century. Blending features of the Italian High Renaissance with northern realism and a love of landscape, Rubens’s unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasised movement, colour and sensuality. His highly charged compositions reference aspects of classical and Christian history, perfectly exemplifying the humanistic ideal of ‘Ut pictura poesis’.
